This past weekend, Greg and I took the train down to Philly to see his parents. I had not met them and he felt like a trip home would be good. We've already kind of determined our plans for the holidays, and they don't include seeing his parents.
On Friday at lunch, we met at the train station at South Station. It was very cool. I had seen it from the outside but not been in. Not to mention, I had never ridden a train in the US. They just don't do it in the South. They don't even consider it as an option. So we board the train and settle in. Four hours, and one viewing of Superbad later, we are at Penn Station (not nearly as cool as Grand Central, more like a bad bus station). We headed to the hotel room, which is literally down the street and check in.
We decide to head south in the general direction of our dinner reservation at Nobu in Tribeca. We almost make it down to the World Trade Center site before we have to head to dinner, which was amazing. We went with the omakaze, which means that you let the chef decide what you get, and we were not disappointed. One of my favorites was fatty toro in a soy, wasabi sauce with some caviar on top. Amazing with a good hint of zing from the wasabi.
Saturday morning we headed down to see Greg's parents and his sister and her boyfriend. We had a very nice weekend with them - Saturday we had lunch in a cute little area called New Hope, went swimming at the neighborhood pool (with giant water slides) and had dinner at his parents house that his sister and her boyfriend cooked. We ended the night with a game of Cranium - girls vs. boys. It ended in a tie around midnight when we were too tired to play anymore.
On Sunday, we went out for Father's Day breakfast and went canoeing/kayaking before heading back to the train station for the ride back to Boston. We didn't get in until almost midnight, but it was a great weekend.
